Effective training sessions are key to your team's development, and there are lots of resources online that can help you plan an effective training session. But it's crucial to remember that most coaches are volunteers. Maintaining a healthy life balance is essential, and you shouldn't put yourself under unnecessary pressure. Do what you can within your limits, and don't feel guilty if you can't plan every session meticulously due to time constraints or limited football knowledge. We are all doing our best as volunteers, so always aim to do the best you can with the resources you have.
Planning Training Sessions
If session planning is your thing, and you feel tactically astute as a coach, then dive right in. But remember that there is often a mixture of ability in grassroots football teams. It's not only important to cater for all ability levels, but also to keep things fun and not take anything too seriously.
Training Safety
Player safety is paramount. Always:
Supervise All Players: Never leave children unattended during training.
Weather: Make provisions for the weather. If it is a hot day, take regular breaks and ensure players are hydrated. If it's cold, advise parents to dress players accordingly and try to avoid drills where players are stood about watching. If it's heavy rain or snow, consider postponing a session if it's outdoors.
Ensure Safe Departure: Confirm that each child is collected by a parent or guardian before leaving the venue.
Be Prepared: Keep a first aid kit accessible and know how to use it.
By prioritising safety, you build trust with both players and parents.
